This is a c. 1945 'R.D.D.' Indian-printed map of the Gobi Desert and Mongolia, including western Manchuria and the eastern U.S.S.R. The deceptively spare map was published in India by an agency known only as R.R.D during a period when the Gobi formed a key buffer between conflicting imperial forces: Russia, China, and Japan. This is a superb, rare example of Joachim Ottens' large, beautifully engraved c. 1719 four-sheet map of Spain and Portugal that notably references battles during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714). The map was printed to four sheets for inclusion in folio atlases, but could be joined together to make a wall map. The plates had a convoluted, yet narrow publication history; any state of this map is a rare find. (more details)

This is a 1935 Egon Huber pictorial map of Rhodes, then a colony of Mussolini's Italy, in an unusual edition with Arabic text on the verso. It reflects the spirit of Rhodes' pre-occupation period, before the onset of aggressive Italianization policies, when the beautiful island was celebrated for its cultural diversity. This is a monumental 1884 Richard Kiepert chromolithograph topographic map of Greece and the Balkan Peninsula. Such maps were introduced for school use and, with their bright colors and large size, became popular throughout Europe. The map depicts the region from central Italy east to the Bosporus and from the Danube Delta on the Black Sea to Crete. Kiepert employs a systematic color model to illustrate topography, river systems, and coastlines. Cities are marked but left unnamed. (more details)

This is Robert de Vaugondy's 1772 map of the northern Pacific Ocean, after that of Joseph De l'Isle, combining two of the most elaborate fallacies to be presented on a map: the Sea of the West and the Northwest Passage attributed to the fictitious Admiral de Fonte. Both fictions fueled avid speculation throughout the latter part of the 18th century. When this map was produced for inclusion in Diderot's Encyclopédie, the question of the possible existence of a Northwest Passage was a great cartographic cause célèbre. (more details)
