This is Cornelis De Jode's rare map of North America, printed in a single edition of 1593. The first full-size folio map specifically of North America, it was among the updated maps added to the De Jode atlas specifically to compete with Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. To this end, it combined cartographic information from current sources with a level of decorative flourish that had not yet appeared in any atlas. In the case of this map, Cornelis focused on a part of the world omitted from the elder De Jode's 1578 atlas. (more details)

This is Vincenzo Coronelli's striking 1688 two-sheet map of North America - one of the largest and most influential atlas maps to appear in the late 17th century. It emerged as much of North America had yet to be penetrated or was in the earliest stages of exploration and colonization - a true golden land of possibility. There is much of interest, including being among the first maps to embrace the cartography of Don Diego Peñalosa in New Mexico, a bold embrace of the Insular California trope, recognition of the Danish explorations of Jens Munk, an early usage of the term Chicago (Chekagou), and an interesting mapping of the apocryphal Lake May, the great inland sea of the southeast. This is a unique rubbing of a Meiji 13 or 1880 map of the Eastern Hemisphere from a carving on the back of a bronze mirror at Kitano Tenmangū Shrine, Kyoto. The mirror and the map were given by the Nissan Nagamori-kō to the Kitano Tenmangū Shrine in 1880. Nonetheless, the map was forgotten until 2015, when it was rediscovered by shrine caretakers, but this rubbing dates to the early Meiji, shortly after the mirror-map was carved. This rubbing was thus likely done for or by one of the Nissan Nagamori-kō, or possibly a pilgrim to the shine shortly after it was donated, but before the mirror was mounted - hiding the map and making all further rubbings impossible. One of the great foundational maps of the American southeast, this is Johannes de Laet's 1630 map of Florida. At the time, Florida referred to a vast region extending from Virginia to the Mississippi Valley, and this map correspondingly covers that region. De Laet based the map on a variety of sources, particularly on Cornelius Claesz's 1602 interpretation of Jacques Le Moyne's map of 1591, the Abraham Ortelius-Hieronymo de Chaves map of 1584, and the Mercator-Hondius map of 1606. This is a rare c. 1900 Raja Ravi Varma chromolithograph view of the Masjid al-Haram (اَلْمَسْجِدُ ٱلْحَرَامُ), Mecca (مكة المكرمة), Saudi Arabia. This is a 1635 edition of Willem Blaeu's map of Scandinavia at the height of the Thirty Years' War. It is based on Anders Bure's 1626 mapping of the region, which swiftly became the dominant mapping of the northern parts of Europe and was not replaced as an authority for more than a century. On the strength of his seminal map and its long tenure as the state-of-the-art map of the northern regions of Europe, Bure is hailed as the Father of Swedish Cartography. This is a rare set of four 1909 Edward Spofford views of Manhattan, New York, as seen from the deck of the Singer Tower. This view was issued at the dawn of the Skyscraper Age when the Singer Tower (1908 - 1968) was the world's tallest building. Thus, Spofford's views, commissioned by the Singer Company, were novel to most New Yorkers, who could have never imagined seeing their city from such a lofty perspective. It is also Spofford's earliest known work. They are a stunning celebration of one of New York's long-lost architectural wonders, a casualty of 'modernization' in the 1960s. (more details)

This is a striking diazo or whiteprint c. 1946 wall map of Denver, Colorado, by the locally based Hotchkiss Map Company. Centered on Capitol Hill, this map covers all of Denver from Lakeside Lake to Aurora and from 54th Avenue to Englewood. An inset map of Englewood occupies the lower left, while another inset on the lower right details the Denver Business District. The map is highly detailed, showing streets, individual buildings, parks, route numbers, railway lines, churches, schools, and other features. It is extremely large - not to be confused with Hotchkiss' smaller but otherwise similar map appearing in his Denver guide. The diazo medium necessarily limits the number of maps produced - thus underscoring this map's exceptional nature. (more details)
