Desnos, Louis Charles (sold)
Louis Charles Desnos (1725 - April 18, 1805) was an important 18th century instrument maker, cartographer and globe maker based in Paris, France. Desnos was born in Pont-Sainte-Maxence, Oise, France, the son of a cloth merchant. From April of 1745 he apprenticed at a metal foundry. Desnos married the widow of Nicolas Hardy, sone of the map, globe, and instrument seller Jacques Hardy. Desnos held the coveted position of Royal Globemaker to the King of Denmark, Christian VII, for which he received a stipend of 500 Livres annually. In return Desnos sent the King roughly 200 Livres worth of maps, books and atlases each year. As a publisher, Desnos produced a substantial corpus of work and is often associated with Zannoni and Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1823). Despite or perhaps because of the sheer quantity of maps Desnos published he acquired a poor reputation among serious cartographic experts, who considered him undiscerning and unscrupulous regarding what he would and would not publish. Desnos consequently had a long history of legal battles with other Parisian cartographers and publishers of the period. It is said that he published everything set before him without regard to accuracy, veracity, or copyright law. Desnos maintained offices on Rue St. Jacques, Paris.

A rare and highly decorative 1761 French wall map of America issued by Louis Charles Desnos. The map covers all of America, from the northern reaches of Hudson Bay to Tierro del Fuego - which just breaks the lower border. Items of note include a bold depiction of the imaginary Sea of the West (Mer d l'Ouest) and a large 'Lac des Zarayes' in South America. An inset in the lower right details the Pacific Northwest and the Bering Strait, incorporating the Sea of the West with the Apocryphal voyages of Admiral Bartholomew de Fonte and the Chinese legends of an American colony named 'Fusang'. A wealth of ships fill the seas as well as nautical routes by famous explorers. The whole is surrounded by a strikingly engraved border illustrating the indigenous peoples of the Americas - frequently in the processes of martyring missionaries and worshiping idols, but also engaging in trade, fishing, and other more mundane activities. This is an extremely rare, unrecorded, matched set, with original hand color, of the 1763 first state, first plate printings of Desnos' maps of the continents. They appeared in Pierre Mathias de Gourné's Atlas abrégé et portatif, printed in 1763 in a single edition. The publisher (Desnos) would replace all of these plates during the course of 1764: so while those copies would continue to be employed in subsequent Desnos productions, the maps would appear in this form only in the 1763 Gourné Atlas. The atlas itself is a great rarity - there are two institutional examples cataloged - and these 1763 states have not to date been recorded. (more details)

An attractive example, with delicately-applied old wash and outline color, of this fascinating map of the world. The map is executed in two hemispheres, each suspended by a titan, one of which is presumably Atlas. Superbly engraved cartocuhes embellish the cusps of the hemispheres. Boasting the state-of-the-art astronomical observations of both Chirikof and Delisle, the map reveals a conjectural Northwest Passage and a massive Sea of the West dominating the northwest part of North America. Australia (Nouvelle Holland on this map) and New Zealand appear in their pre-Cook delineation, with indistinct eastern coastlines. It was engraved using two separate copperplates: one for the map itself, and another for the decorative rococo border. (this allowed for different borders to be employed in later editions of the atlas.) (more details)

A stunning large format wall map of the world in six panels issued in 1786 by Charles Desnos and Nicolas Jaugeon. Described by map historian Rodney W. Shirley as 'a veritable compendium of a map,' this is one of the most richly informative cartographic productions ever issued. The map consists of a double hemisphere map projection surrounded by no less than 60 Aeoli windheads, astronomical data on constellations, cosmic systems, and other charts - intentionally placing the world in the context of the greater cosmos. Its elegant presentation conveys confidence in the human capacity to describe not only the Earth, but the cosmos itself. The double hemisphere map rests upon Corinthian columns, underscoring the classical foundations of western scientific thought, here augmented by new discovery. The unique, neo-classical motif is carried through to the bottom half of the engraving, where panels of text are set within a portico supported by Corinthian columns. Completing the illusion are a coffered roof and a patterned tile floor. At the base of the columns there busts and accounts of the great explorers, among them Columbus, Magellan, and Vasco de Gama.
