This is an extremely rare, separately issued 1754 George Foster / Robert Sayer map of Asia. Although printed in 1754, the map's cartography dates to c. 1735, when it was first issued in a now-lost edition by the map seller George Foster. The map features elaborate decorative side panels, added in 1754 by Sayer, illustrating Asiatic religious practices. This map stands out for its remarkable rarity, being one of only 3 known surviving examples. It is also significant for its use of the term 'Sea of Corea' (Sea of Korea) to denote the sea between Japan and Korea, the naming of which is a matter of international contention. (more details)

This is a rare c. 1854 kawaraban satirical woodblock print, produced by the pseudonymous Kanoka Mamaro (寒翁窠馬麿), depicting one of Commodore Matthew Perry's 'black ships.' It demonstrates that, even amid a strict regime of censorship, Japanese publishers sought to profit by informing and entertaining the public, including with irreverent takes on the historically significant events underway. The only known surviving example of this large-format woodcut 'cheap print' issued by George Thompson in 1813, celebrating the Duke of Wellington's stunning triumph over French forces at the Battle of Vitoria (June 21, 1813), a decisive battle in the years-long Peninsular War (1808 - 1814). It is likely the earliest printed representation of the battle, being a news-as-it-happened publication. The victory helped to solidify Wellington's stature as the ablest British commander of land forces, earning him the rank of field marshal and later the title of Duke. The 'cheap print' is a uniquely British form of graphic news publishing issued for distribution among the uneducated but engaged populace. (more details)

This extraordinary 1763 engraving emerged from one of the great religious and political controversies of 18th-century France. It reproduces the notorious Tableau de la Religion, a monumental allegorical painting discovered at the Jesuit college in Billom and subsequently seized upon as evidence during the campaign to suppress the Society of Jesus. At its center, an immense Jesuit galleon sails triumphantly toward salvation while popes, kings, Catholics, heretics, sinners, and demons struggle through the surrounding waters. In a remarkable reversal of meaning, an image apparently created to glorify Jesuit spirituality was transformed by the Society's enemies into propaganda against it - purported visual proof of Jesuit arrogance, ambition, and claims to spiritual supremacy. A striking 1918 Jules Abel Faivre French broadside celebrating the United States' entry into World War I (1914 - 1918). The broadside was issued shortly after the American Expeditionary Force landed some 1.2 million soldiers in Europe, marking a turning point toward inevitable Allied victory. The image is centered on Winged Liberty representing the 'Spirit of America'. Her wings take the form of American Flags, and she carries a sword in her right hand, ready to defend liberty. Her eyes are frozen white and distant, underscoring both detachment and purity. Behind her march endless troops of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). In the foreground, the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II (1859 - 1941), looks on despondently, aware of his impending and inevitable defeat. (more details)

This is an impressive c. 1887 Willard Glazier map of northern central Minnesota in the vicinity of Leech Lake and Lake Itasca. The map records Willard W. Glazier's claims to have discovered the 'true' source of the Mississippi River at Elk Lake, which he attempts to rename 'Lake Glazier'. Glazier's claims contain an element of truth, and this map has merit, despite his 'discoveries' being universally derided by the geographical establishment, largely due to distaste for his bombastic and abrasive personal character. With the U.S. Capitol towering in the background, a hand offers 'your monthly Social Security check' from the United States government: 'A monthly check to you for the rest of your life beginning when you are 65'. The reader is urged to 'get your Social Security Account Number promptly' and that 'applications are being distributed at all work places'. Informative and instructional, the poster includes details regarding eligibility, and how to return an application. Intriguingly, text along the bottom reads, 'Postmasters will display this poster in a conspicuous place in the Post Office lobby, on arrival, but not before November 24, 1936.' While this broadside does show evidence of being displayed in a post office, including pinholes in the upper margin, it is in very good condition. (more details)
