This is a 1953 Tommy Robuck pictorial map of Oahu, Hawaii, issued for U.S. Navy personnel. The Special Services office published this map to help off-duty sailors enjoy the island, while at the same time encouraging dignified comportment. 'Authorized beaches for military personnel' are highlighted in yellow. These include Waikiki Beach, Waialae Beach at Diamond Head, Waimanalo Beach Park, Manners Beach, Waianae Army Beach, and numerous others. Pearl Harbor is prominently illustrated. Pictorial vignettes illustrate other sites around the island, including the Mormon temple, the Lualualei Naval Radio Station, Schofield Army Base, Wheeler Air Force Base, and Hickam Field. Solid black lines mark main roads, while dashed lines mark 'not recommended' dirt roads. Oahu's most plentiful resources, palm trees, pineapples, and sugar cane, appear throughout. (more details)

This is a fine example of a scarce and unusual map of Africa, included in scholar John Reynolds' 1739 and 1761 editions of Pomponius Mela's first century geographical work, De Situ Orbis. The map was intended to aid the modern reader with ancient geography, by placing the first century Roman geographer's toponymy in the framework of a more modern delineation of the continent. In order to do so, despite presenting a recognizable 18th century outline of Africa, the mountains and rivers displayed on the map correspond more closely to the ideas of Mela than those of later cartographers. Most obvious among these traits is the lack of any river associated with the Atlantic, and the depiction of the River Nile with its headwaters in a massive lake reminiscent of the westernmost of the pair that would be associated with the later Roman geographer, Ptolemy. This is a 1982 Penc McDonald pictorial map of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, created to promote the city. Businesses and tourist attractions, including restaurants, hotels, and many of Vancouver's largest buildings, are illustrated. Several Gray Line Tours buses take tourists sightseeing as the A. L. R. The is the first official map of the Canadian Pacific Railroad issued after the railroad's completion in 1885. This map is of critical importance to the development of the Canadian Confederation, as well as the first complete map of the second North American intercontinental railroad. This enormous map was issued in 1886 by A. M. Edwards and Canadian Government Railways. Depicting the entire country in two sections, the map identifies ninety-three different railways throughout Canada - but the focus is the impressive Canadian Pacific Route, which stretches from Montreal to British Columbia. Maritime routes between North America and Europe and Asia, which connected to the Railroad and were part of the Canadian Pacific's marketing model, are also noted. (more details)

This is an uncommon 1855 George Frederick Cruchley map of London and its immediate environs. Presented here in case format, Cruchley's map depicts the area thirty miles around London, or from Hertford to Turnbridge and Godalming, and from Windsor to Chatham. Exceptionally vivid color work identifies counties, rail lines, roads, and forests. This is a beautiful c. 1930 Intourist U.S.S.R. Travel Company pictorial map of the Caucasus. The map is most intriguing as while clearly a tourist-focused piece, the English-speaking audiences for whom it was intended are mysteriously absent. The English only established normalized relation with the USSR a year before, and the Americans had not. Moreover, this map appeared at the height of the Great Depression, when global travel dropped to a trickle. (more details)

This is an 1885 French Service Géographique de l'Armée map of Tonkin, the northern region of modern-day Vietnam, then French Indochina. This map was published for the French army just after the end of the Sino-French War. Red lines trace roads throughout the region and red crossed swords mark battlefields. The map focuses on the Red River Delta and uses the Vietnamese word cua to identify the many rivers along the Gulf of Tonkin.
