This is a large-format 1914 map of the Adirondack region, prepared by Matthews-Northrup for the New York Central Railroad. At this time, the New York Central had a near-monopoly on the Adirondacks, which had become a favorite destination for elite clientele from New York and other cities in the eastern U.S. and Canada. This is William Furness Brasier's 1762 map of Lakes Champlain and George, in its rare August 5, 1776, first state. It is the first separate map of Lake Champlain and Lake George. It would certainly have been in the hands of the British officers leading the Fall 1777 campaign during the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783), which culminated in the pivotal American victory at Saratoga. Most examples of this first state that we have seen on the market were issued in the so-called 'Holster Atlas,' and as such, exhibit significantly more folds and wear than this example, which appears to have been preserved in a larger-format book. The address book was compiled by someone with deep connections to the U.K. and specifically the Liverpool shipping industry.The book contains 177 neatly written names and addresses, 113 of which are in Liverpool in the vicinity of White Star Lines offices (1864 - 1897). While the owner and compiler of the book is unknown, the author was undoubtedly active in shipping or shipbuilding circles in Liverpool between about 1840 and 1910. (more details)

This is the 1675 first French edition of the earliest specific map of Barbados during the Sugar Revolution. The map is based upon Richard Ligon's 1657 map, composed from information received in Barbados from Captain John Swan, the island's leading surveyor. Ligon compiled it in debtor's prison after returning to London from a 2-year stint as a planter in Barbados. The map is oriented to the east and offers fair accuracy, though it exaggerates the island's length by roughly a third. The map identifies numerous plantations throughout by name, as well as the beginnings of Bridgetown as 'Bridge'. In the middle of the map, a notation references the land leased by James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle (c. 1580 - 1636), to a group of merchants after Charles I rescinded the original grant of the island to Sir William Courteen (1572 - 1636).
