This is the suppressed 1784 first edition of Henry Roberts and Captain James Cook's legendary 'Lost Map', issued separately by London publisher William Faden. This is the first map to illustrate the discoveries of Samuel Herne on the Coppermine River. The chart was censured due to the political machinations of the powerful Hudson Bay Company, which had a sustained interest in keeping Herne's voyage secret as it disproved the notion that an inland water route might connect the Hudson Bay with the Pacific, thus threatening the HBC's stock value. A striking 1934 Survey of India wall map of Nepal. This is the 'first edition' of the first trigonometrical survey of Nepal, completed by the all-Indian Nepal Detachment of the Survey of India at a time when Nepal was still closed to foreigners under the Rana Dynasty's isolation policy. It is a mapmaking triumph considered the world's first serious look at the interior cartography of Nepal. The map was issued in the wake of the 1934 Great Bihar-Nepal Earthquake, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake considered one of the most destructive in history. (more details)

We are aware of no earlier cartographic work that attempts to synthesize all known comet sightings, marking this map as a significant step forward in the study of astronomy. This is Cornelis Cruys' rare, two-sheet chart of the Don River, the first modern astronomical survey of that waterway, based on his 1699 observations made while accompanying Peter the Great and the new Russian Black Sea Fleet from Voronezh to Azov. The plates were engraved by Hendrick Doncker for inclusion in Cruys' 1704 atlas of the Don; the present example is of the c. 1729 state, updated and printed by the Ottens firm for inclusion in their atlases. All states of the chart are rare, with the Doncker all but unacquirable. (more details)
