This is a 1720 Henri Abraham Chatelain chart of historical empires and nations before the Common Era. The chart chronicles thousands of years of human history and separates nations and empires into columns. Among the histories recounted are those of Rome, Egypt, China, Sparta (Lacedemone), Athens, Corinth, Judea, and Persia. Two maps accompany the chart, with one focusing on the Peloponnesus and southern Greece and the other on Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. In a short description, Chatelain explains that they used the year 4000 to represent the year of the birth of Jesus Christ, allowing viewers to better understand how the numbers next to each ruler's name provide a chronological understanding of events. This is a 1761 Claude Buy de Mornas celestial map of the Earth's seasons. Using this orbit diagram, Buy de Mornas explains such concepts as why summer is longer than winter. He illustrates the Earth's elliptical orbit, exchanges how it changes in speed, which causes one part of the orbit (a season) to take longer than the other. He also effectively illustrates how the Earth's tilt with respect to the Sun effects the seasons, although he does not include this detail in the discussion of the seasons to the left of the diagram. To the right, Buy de Mornas discusses heat retention and how the changes daylight certain parts of the Earth receive during different parts of the year results in the temperature changes. A finely executed 18th century manuscript map of Dunkirk, France illustrating both the old and new ship canals. Probably dating from the Seven Years' War (1756 - 1763) or slightly after, this map focuses on the two major canals giving access to Dunkirk's harbor. The Canal du Mardick takes center stage and is just above the cartouche. An older ship's canal, in the upper right, provides access to the old citadel. It was part of Vauban's Pré Carré, a system of fortresses protecting northern France from naval attack. Dunkirk was of special significance as the primary access point to French inland navigation. Canals extending south from the Canal du Mardick, including the Canal de Furnes, Canal de Burgues, the Canal de Bourburg, connect to France's major northwestern rivers, including the Aa, the Escaut, the Lys, and the Furnes. This is an 1862 Walter L. Nicholson map of eastern Virginia and Maryland, published during the second year of the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). The map embraces the Eastern Theater of war, from Pennsylvania south to the North Carolina - Virginia border. Washington, D.C. stands out on the Potomac River, while red concentric circles in ten mile increments focus upon Richmond. No battlefields are explicitly marked, but landmarks for which battles were named both before and after this map was published, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Court House, and Gettysburg, appear. Red overprinting illustrates the railroad network, which proved critical to both the Union and Confederate war effort. Both sides used the railroads to move men and supplies to and from battlefields. Railroads and railroad hubs thus became strategic targets for raids and advancing armies. (more details)
