This is an exceptional original c. 1880 manuscript map of New Orleans drafted by eccentric German-American civil engineer Baron Ludwig von Reizenstein for later publication in George E. Waring Jr.'s influential Report on the Social Statistics of Cities. It records the 1849 Sauvé Crevasse Flood, one of the most destructive natural disasters to befall 19th-century New Orleans. The report, survey, and map were significant in influencing late 19th-century efforts at New Orleans flood control. Unlike his other maps of New Orleans events, which were based on historical sources, Reizenstein likely witnessed this flood in person. (more details)

This 1804 production is the largest and most detailed map of Malta and Gozo to appear in the 19th century. The map was produced by Pierre Marie Louis de Boisgelin de Kerdu and Samuel John Neele based upon Boisgelin's life in Malta as a member of the knightly Order of St. John. The map is matched in dimensions and sophistication only by the Carte Generale de la Principaute Souveraine des Isles de Malte et du Goze (53.1 x 22.8 inches), made by Gervais de Palmeus in 1752. This is the 1606 issue of Giovanni Battista Ramusio's seminal map of Sumatra, 'the first separate map of any Southeast Asian island to be based on actual observation' (Suarez) and one of the first European maps to focus narrowly on so remote a part of the world. It is derived ultimately from the charts of Pierre Crignon, Dieppe navigator and chartmaker, who attended the 1529 attempt of Jean and Raoul Parmentier to set up a trading colony in Sumatra on behalf of the French. The Parmentiers failed and died overseas, but the account of their voyage survived, along with the first detailed charting of the island - preserved in print here. (more details)

This 1737 Homann Heirs engraving presents a quartet of maps depicting the British Colonies in North America. The four segments present Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, New England, Virginia and Maryland, and the Carolinas, respectively. The maps' detail is drawn closely from the work of Hermann Moll: each of the individual maps appeared as separate maps in Moll's Atlas Minor.
