Homann, Johann Baptist (sold)

Johann Baptist Homann (March 20, 1664 - July 1, 1724) was the most prominent and prolific map publisher of the 18th century. Homann was born in Oberkammlach, a small town near Kammlach, Bavaria, Germany. As a young man, Homann studied in a Jesuit school and nursed ambitions of becoming a Dominican priest. Nonetheless, he converted to Protestantism in 1687, when he was 23. It is not clear where he mastered engraving, but we believe it may have been in Amsterdam. Homann's earliest work we have identified is about 1689, and already exhibits a high degree of mastery. Around 1691, Homann moved to Nuremberg and registered as a notary. By this time, he was already making maps, and very good ones at that. He produced a map of the environs of Nürnberg in 1691/92, which suggests he was already a master engraver. Around 1693, Homann briefly relocated to Vienna, where he lived and studied printing and copper plate engraving until 1695. Until 1702, he worked in Nuremberg in the map trade under Jacob von Sandrart (1630 - 1708) and then David Funck (1642 - 1709). Afterward, he returned to Nuremberg, where, in 1702, he founded the commercial publishing firm that would bear his name. In the next five years, Homann produced hundreds of maps and developed a distinctive style characterized by heavy, detailed engraving, elaborate allegorical cartouche work, and vivid hand color. Due to the lower cost of printing in Germany, the Homann firm could undercut the dominant French and Dutch publishing houses while matching their diversity and quality. Despite copious output, Homann did not release his first major atlas until the 33-map Neuer Atlas of 1707, followed by a 60-map edition of 1710. By 1715, Homann's rising star caught the attention of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, who appointed him Imperial Cartographer. In the same year, he was also appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Homann's prestigious title came with several significant advantages, including access to the most up-to-date cartographic information as well as the 'Privilege'. The Privilege was a type of early copyright offered to very few by the Holy Roman Emperor. Though less sophisticated than modern copyright legislation, the Privilege offered limited protection for several years. Most all J. B. Homann maps printed between 1715 and 1730 bear the inscription 'Cum Priviligio' or some variation. Homann was also skilled at cultivated learned relationships throughout Europe, for example, in 1723, documents from the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences identify him as an 'Agent of Muscovy', indicating an official connection to the cartographic circles in Russia. Following Homann's death in 1724, the firm's map plates and management passed to his son, Johann Christoph Homann (1703 - 1730). J. C. Homann, perhaps realizing that he would not long survive his father, stipulated in his will that the company would be inherited by his two head managers, Johann Georg Ebersberger (1695 - 1760) and Johann Michael Franz (1700 - 1761), and that it would publish only under the name 'Homann Heirs'. This designation, in various forms (Homannsche Heirs, Heritiers de Homann, Lat Homannianos Herod, Homannschen Erben, etc.) appears on maps from about 1731 onwards. The firm continued to publish maps in ever-diminishing quantities until the death of its last owner, Christoph Franz Fembo (1781 - 1848).

This is Jacob Sandrart's scarce, separately published 1697 map of Africa. While cartographically derived from the influential 1670 Totius Africae Accuratissima Tabula by Frederic de Wit, this map is notable for being the first or second signed engraving by Johann Baptist Homann, who would become one of the most important German map publishers of the 18th century. (The other contender is Sandrart's map of the Americas, similarly derived from the work of De Wit.) These maps' production in 1697 just preceded the opening of Homann's own shop, in 1702. The present example is the first plate, engraved by the elder Homann before 1707. Thus, the present example is the most desirable Homann map of America. (more details)

This is Johan Baptist Homann's first map of Asia, in a bold, attractively-colored example of its 1707 first plate. It presents the state of the art of mapping the eastern extreme of the Asian continent, working to reconcile the geography of Nicolas Witsen with De Vries and other explorers of the Pacific. It incorporates the Dutch discoveries in Australia and the East Indies, as well as Dampier's explorations as recently as 1700. Its elaborate allegorical cartouches are executed with the skill and beauty associated with the earliest iterations of Homann's maps. (more details)

This is the scarce first plate of Johann Baptist Homann's 1707 map of the world in a double hemisphere projection. It is both long misunderstood and mis-identified: it was a novel and influential adaptation of up-to-date cartographic information (including the explorations of Dampier and the studies of Edmund Halley). Moreover, the present example is the first plate, engraved by or for the elder Homann in 1707. Most examples of the map of this title appearing on the market are a different plate, engraved by Homann's son no earlier than 1724 (identified by the Imperial privilege.) This dramatic c. 1710 map of Crete and the Greek Islands was engraved for inclusion in the atlases of J. B. Homann. A striking example of Johann Baptist Homann's c. 1715 map of Virginia, Carolina, Maryland, and New Jersey, considered one of the most important maps of this region to appear in the 18th century, here in its first state. Homann drew this map to advocate for Virginia Lieutenant-Governor Alexander Spotswood's 1714 - 1717 plan to settle the little-known interior of Virginia with German immigrants. Shown here is the first mapping of 'Germantown Teutsche Statt' (Germanna) on the Rapidan River, a fork of the Rappahannock River, Fort Christanna (Christ Anna Fort) on the Makharing River, and 'Miester Krugs Plantasie' on the James River. Omission of Spotswood's connection to this map have long led it to being misunderstood or outright dismissed by scholars. Coverage extends from New York City and Long Island south along the Atlantic Cost as far as modern-day Georgia, and as far west as Lake Erie. (more details)

This is a beautiful example of J. B. Homann's 1707 map of the Holy Land. As Homann noted in the map's title, it is derived from the work of the French mapmaker Guillaume Sanson (1633 - 1703). The map combines modern geographical information with place names drawn from Biblical history: specifically, the Exodus, and the settlement of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. It depicts the Mediterranean coast from Sidon (in modern-day Lebanon) to Alexandria (not named, but marked with Pompey's Pillar). The territories of the Tribes of Israel are marked, appearing on both sides of the Jordan. Mountains and forest regions are illustrated pictorially. Intriguingly, the Dead Sea contains the ruins of Sodom, Gomorrah, Adama, and Seboim - all destroyed for their sins. (more details)

This is a fascinating 1716 J. B. Homann diagram of a three-masted, 96-gun Man-o'-War - the workhorse warship of 18th-century European navies. Such ships, also called Ships of the Line, dominated the recently-ended War of Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714), making this diagram a subject of great interest to the educated European populace. A significant though often overlooked piece, this is J. B. Homann's c. 1716 map of New England, New York, and New Jersey. Though titled 'Nova Anglia,' (New England) Homann's map actually covers a much broader area from New France (Canada) to the Delaware Bay, and from Philadelphia to Nova Scotia, inclusive of all of New England, New York, and New Jersey, as well as parts of adjacent Canada and Pennsylvania. The map identifies both European and American Indian settlements, differentiating between the two by rendering indigenous settlements as pictorial villages, huts and all, and European towns as small circles, major cities like Philadelphia and Boston being the exception. This is Johann Baptist Homann's 1716 map of Scandinavia, bringing the dominant 17th century mapping of the northern parts of Europe up-to-date with the events of the Great Northern War (1700 - 1721). The map is based primarily on Anders Bure's 1626 mapping of the region, which became the state of the art of the mapping of Scandinavia and was replaced as an authority for more than a century. In this regard, Bure is hailed as the Father of Swedish Cartography. The scope of the map includes Denmark, Norway, the greater Swedish Empire, the Baltic coasts of Germany, Poland and Livonia, and the Russian Empire - including 'Lapponia Moscovitica,' the portions of Lapland occupied by Russia. This is Johan Baptist Homann's map of the Kingdom of Sweden, bringing what was the dominant mapping of Sweden and its neighbors up-to-date with the events of the Great Northern War. Homann starts - almost certainly - with Frederic de Wit's 1680 Regni Sueciae but adds detail and placenames that did not exist prior to the 1700–1721 Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia, and particularly before the 1703 capture of the island of Kotlin by Russia from Sweden, the 1703 Russian capture of Nyenskans, and the foundation of the city of St. Petersburg. Also marked is the town of Schlisselburg, formerly Oreshek, which was captured by Russia in 1702 and renamed by Peter the Great during his administrative reforms. An earlier iteration of this map appearing in a 1716 example of the Atlas Novus includes Petersburg and Kronschloss (formerly Kotlin) but does not name Schlüsselburg. That placename would be included in Ingermanland Governorate in 1710 and would in 1727 become part of Sankt-Petersburgsky Uyezd. Many city names have been underlined in an old hand, and, in some cases, placenames have been added. For example, the Finnish city of Wekelax (Veckelax) has had inscribed above it the name 'Fridrichsham.' The city, as originally named on the map, had been burned by the Russians in 1712. Following the peace of 1721, the city was rebuilt, and renamed after Sweden's new King Frederick I. (more details)
