This is the monumental 1775 Fry/Jefferson map of Virginia and Maryland, the most important colonial map of Virginia, in its original four-sheet English version. Drawn by Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson in 1751 and first printed in 1753, this was the first accurate survey of the interior of Virginia. It was the first printed map to approximate the parallel ridges and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains, and the first to accurately depict the Blue Ridge Mountains. Following the revision of the map in 1755, this was the first map to include Virginia's road system, also marking routes used by frontier traders and Native Americans. Following that revision, it contained the best mapping of the Upper Ohio Valley and the Virginia frontier produced during the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763) and remained the prototype for all subsequent maps of Virginia until the 19th century. As both Fry and Jefferson were denizens of the colony, this further represents the first map of Virginia produced by Virginians. (more details)

A fine example of Purdy's important 1821 map of Cabotia or Canada and New England – at the time the largest and finest map of that region. Cabotia is Purdy's manufactured term for eastern Canada or those lands discovered by John Cabot in 1497. The map covers from Lake Michigan to Newfoundland and from Labrador to New York City. Within Canada, it includes all of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. In the United States, it includes all of New England, Michigan, and New York, as well as parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania. There are no fewer than 10 inset detail maps including a map of the Great lakes, the environs of Quebec, the St. Lawrence River, Niagara and vicinity, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Halifax, St. John, and New York Harbor. This is a beautiful 1688 Vincenzo Maria Coronelli globe gore focused on North America east of the Mississippi and west of the Chesapeake, engraved Coronelli's masterpiece 3 1/2 foot globe. The copperplate was adapted in 1697 for inclusion in Coronelli's bound atlases, masked off between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator to fit book format. The gore covers most of North America east of the Mississippi, spanning from the Tropic of Cancer to the Arctic Circle. Thus, it shows the northern Gulf Coast, Florida, Chesapeake Bay, the Mississippi River (after La Salle), the Great Lakes, and Hudson's Bay. The geography is substantively the same as that on Coronelli's two-sheet America Settentrionale. Although that map bears the date 1688, it was not actually published any earlier than 1690 and it is very probable that the globes represent the earlier appearance of this geographical information. This is an impressively elusive 1831 William Chapin wall map of Ohio - one of the earliest large format wall maps of the state to exhibit a complete county structure. The state's interconnected network of roads and canals is illustrated in detail, including the National Road (then under construction), the Ohio and Erie Canal, and the Miami and Erie Canal. This map supersedes the 1825 John Kilbourne map of Ohio, expanding upon it in terms of completeness, detail, and proportion. (more details)

It extends south as far as Tennessee and the Outer Banks. A high level of detail is present with regard to rail lines, including many stopping points throughout. Otherwise, the cartographers took a minimalist approach and areas underserved by the railroad networks are generally left blank. Red overprinting emphasizes the Bellefontaine, Terre Haute, and St. Louis Railroad, an extensive network with coverage from New York City to St. Louis. An inset featuring an engraving of the Indianapolis Central Terminal occupies the lower right. (more details)

This John Melish's 1815 map of the northeastern United States and Canada, one of the earliest works by the first American publisher to concentrate specifically on maps. It is moreover one of the earliest maps specifically relating to the War of 1812 (1812 - 1815), and is one of the few maps pertinent to the war that was printed while it was still underway. It is, moreover, one of the best Federal Period maps available to the collector. Melish drew the map prior to the declaration of the war, and published it in conjunction with his 1812 A description of the British possessions in North America. So successful was that work that the plate swiftly wore out. This second edition of the map - 'with additions and improvements' - was engraved to accompany Melish's 1813 Military and Topographical Atlas of the United States. The identical second edition appeared in the 1815 second edition of the work. Both editions were engraved by Henry Schenck Tanner, and in this respect the map represents the work of two definitive figures in American map publishing. (more details)
